Pressure Canner Testing Available in the Douglas County Extension Office

home canned fruits and vegetables

The Douglas County office of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Division of Extension is testing Presto dial gauge canners. Please call the office at 715-395-1363 to request a time to bring in your canner to be tested.

This service is offered at no charge to members of the community.

Douglas County Extension reminds consumers that Presto dial gauge canners must be tested every year against a calibrated gauge to ensure that they are working properly. Pressure canners manufactured by Presto, Maid of Honor, Magic Seal or National should be tested.

The Douglas County office offers this service to members of the community to help home canners safely preserve the bounty of the harvest.

Only dial gauge canners must be checked every year, it is not necessary to test weighted gauge canners. Even dial gauges that are brand new should be checked before they are used.

Consumers may bring in the dial gauge or, preferably, the lid of the canner with the gauge attached. The Douglas County office will inspect the sealing gasket and other parts for wear and tear.
